Dykes on Bikes® Women’s Motorcycle Contingent is an organization committed to creating a local, national and international community of women motorcyclists and friends of women motorcyclists. Our mission is to support philanthropic endeavors in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and women’s communities, and to reach out to empower a community of diverse women through rides, charity events, Pride events and education. Dykes on Bikes® – Salt Lake is organized as a Utah non-profit and 501(c)(3).

No! Dykes on Bikes® is a world wide Women’s Motorcycle Contingent made up of representatives of the movement for the equality and empowerment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+). By participating in Pride parades and hosting philanthropic events, our sole goal is to increase visibility and educate others about the past and present struggles of members of the LGBTQ+ community in an ongoing fight for civil rights and equality.

In fact, Dykes on Bikes® Chapters are organized as non-profit, 501(c)(3), entities in the US and world-wide as charity organizations under the laws of their country. Dykes on Bikes® uses its brand to supports and empowers Women and the LGTBQ+ cultivating a brand of political activism and awareness, in support civil rights, and combat harmful stereotypes about women and the entire LGBTQ+ community.

Not anymore! The organization was founded in 1976 when a small group of motorcyclists gathered at the front of the San Francisco Pride Parade and became the first  “Dykes on Bikes”.

In keeping with the theme of “Pride,” they chose the name “Dykes” precisely because of its history as an insult. The message it conveyed was, in part, that being a dyke was not something to be ashamed of. Instead of hiding in private homes and clubs, lesbians could be out and proud, riding powerful machines at the front of parades celebrating the civil rights of LGBTQ+ people. The social and personal impact of the Dykes on Bikes® brand has helped “Dyke” evolve from a slur to a word of empowerment and pride.
